What are the precautions to take while shutting down a back pressure steam turbine for extended period of time?
We have a 500 kW Back Pressure Steam Turbine working on Saturated Steam. We will be shutting down this turbine for next 6 months. What are the precautions to be taken before we shutdown the turbine so that the turbine does not face any detonation or corrosion.
Very few companies have success with saturated steam. I am happy you have saturated turbine and it work good. As per my knowledge, best is to make sure there is no condensate trapped inside turbine casing for long shutdown. If condensate trapped inside, the TDS of condensate increase when evaporates. This will make pitting inside the casing. So, you must open all drains and make sure there is no condensate. Also it is good idea to rotate the turbine by hand once every two week and rest the shaft in another orientation than before to avoid bearing surface damage.
